From our members:

"I joined the centre in 2012 and it has proved to be invaluable to my development as a writer. The workshops have been excellent as well as being affordable." Sheree Kristoffersen (2nd prize in the Newcastle Herald Short Story Competition)

"HWC has been important to my writing life: its newsletters and resources regarding publishing opportunities; its recent Café poetry project; its exciting ventures in the last year into social media, with a lively website and inviting Facebook page.
The Newcastle Poetry Prize is on the literary map of Australia and, through this prize, Newcastle is now known worldwide for its championing of poetry. The Newcastle Poetry Prize is the jewel every poet would love to claim.  Jean Kent (established writer and member for 16 years)

"I am excited about all the writing that is happening in Newcastle." Gabrielle Clover (Newcastle Cafe Poet-in-Residence, Australian Poetry Society)

"I have received valuable assistance in developing my writing skills which has helped me progress towards my goal of becoming a published author. The HWC is an invaluable community resource, providing learning, information and networking opportunities that strengthen the art of creative and other forms of written communication within the Hunter Region." Lucy Woollard

Short Story Competition

Congratulations to the 25 finalists. 13 of the 25 finalists were members of HWC

Enjoy some of these engaging sentences from their stories:

HWC member Meg Buxton wrote a story about a classic Australian summer holiday that included terrific sentences like: "We return to the campsite for lunch and ice-blocks from the kiosk that melt and leave trails of red and green like exotic henna tattoos on our hands. The parents dig through ice-filled Eskies for cans of cold beer and by mid-afternoon they sprawl in the shade of the trees, anaesthetised."

From HWC member Anthony Wood's story: "I scan the water with binoculars and catch sight of the boat. It glides across the surface engaged in
a waltz with the wind. A gust grabs the mast with a firm grasp and dips the sail towards a watery dance floor. The wind makes a fine suitor and the two pirouette through a jibe. A tack steps out a zig-zag foxtrot and they draw close."

Mark Liston, HWC member wrote: "The low tide of dark midnight had dragged at him like an incoming tide drags at the chain of a kellick, anchoring a little boat to the bottom of the lake."
